Earlier today Joe Carnahan, scheduled to be the director of a Daredevil movie produced by Fox, confirmed on Twitter that the deal has fallen through and the movie he intended to make is unlikely to happen. We reported last week that a deal was apparently in the works for Fox’s rights to Daredevil being extended in exchange for the rights to Galactus and Silver Surfer. Whether this was true or not now seems immaterial as Carnahan has confirmed that the clock has ticked down at fox and it has gone “tits up”.

Carnahan later posted two versions of his show-reel for his vision of a “Serpico” style Daredevil. Heavy on 70’s imagery and music, yet dark and really quite violent (at least the uncensored version) I think for a lot of Daredevil fans this is the film they have been waiting for. And as a huge fan of DD I can say that this vision is definitely what I would like to see.

You can see the videos here. The top one is the less violent version, so you may as well go straight to the second one you sickos.

What I don’t quite get is the deadline for Fox to get things moving on this film was/is October 10th. So there’s still time right? Well no. According to Deadline, Fox “is prepared to see the rights to [Daredevil] revert back to Marvel Studios, and fall under the Disney umbrella. Marvel essentially said no to an extension and to Fox’s request that it come aboard as co-financier of the Daredevil film.” And Fox already has several Marvel properties in the works as films, such as Wolverine and Fantastic Four.

There is a chance that Carnahan will be able to bring his vision to the screen over at Disney, once the rights go back to them, but that remains to be seen.

Sadly, it seems that we are a few steps further away from a Daredevil film that the character deserves. For now we’ll keep waiting, and hoping.

  1. I hope when Disney gets it they will do a movie and do it well. I actually enjoyed the first movie (I know that is not a popular opinion) but it would be nice to see it done a bit differently.

  2. I hope so too. I think the Daredevil character is ready for another big screen adventure with a different take. I enjoyed the first movie because it was a Daredevil movie really, though I don’t think it was anywhere near as bad as some people make out.

  3. It’s such a shame that Fox is letting this one go. Carnahan’s take on it is just what the character needed i.e. a noir visualisation similar in style to Frank Millers ‘Born Again’. I fear that Disney-Marvel will not do it any justice should they decide to move on it especially if they pull DD into the developing Marvel Universe.

    1. I share your fears about Disney-Marvel pulling DD into the Marvel Universe on film. Although DD makes appearances in the wider Marvel universe in the comics I think essentially he can and should stand alone, in both print and on screen. His character is strong enough to do this.

  4. The second video looks amazing! It’s exactly what Daredevil needs. I enjoyed the Directors Cut of the original Daredevil which had Coolio, it made the story a lot smoother although Ben Affleck is a cheesy and pretty bad all round actor you just have to over look that.

    1. I know. The video looks really great – I think it would have been absolutely brilliant. And hey, I like Ben Affleck! 🙂
