A chart-topping, foot-stomping band with accolades a-plenty, Blue Moon Rising has been a big hit in the States for years. But with very little coverage this side of the pond, it’s about time that the UK learned a little more about this innovative bunch of all-American heroes.

Geeks Unleashed: Which are you main musical influences?

Blue Moon Rising: The Knoxville Grass, The Country Gentlemen, Tony Rice, J.D. Crowe and the New South, Ricky Skaggs, Bill Monroe, Ralph Stanley, The Seldom Scene, Darrell Scott.

GU: You’ve somehow managed to develop a particularly unique style that at the same time is also 100% straight-up bluesgrass. What do you think is the key to this signature sound?

BMR: I think the key to our sound is the fact that we write the majority of our songs that are inspired by the sounds and themes that we all grew up with.

GU: Since bluegrass isn’t a particularly big genre in the UK, can you give five compelling reasons to get into this foot-stomping musical form?

BMR: Bluegrass music and bluegrass music festivals are some of the most fun you can ever have.  Bluegrass music is a huge family that welcomes all comers, even the most novice or potential bluegrass music fan!

GU: Exciting stuff! So how about a UK show?

BMR: We have all had the dream in our band for many years now to do a small European tour, particularly in the UK. Bring us across the pond and we’ll be sure to show you a hell of a good time!

GU: It has been two years since you released Strange New World, when can we expect a new record?

BMR: We will be releasing our new CD (currently in progress) in the spring of 2013.

GU: Do you have a favourite album or track?

BMR: Our favourite album to date is Strange New World, but our next one will probably knock it off the list and become our favourite!

GU: That’s quite a claim! OK, now for the personal stuff… tell me three bizarre – but printable facts – about each of you.

  • Chris West – Loves comic books and super hero movies and is currently 300 pounds of twisted steel and sex appeal!
  • Tony Mowell – Former drag car racer bass player extraordinaire!  Brandon Bostic – Has a brand new dog named Dempsey (named after the great mandolin player from the Lost and Found) and soon to be married!
  • Rusty Ferrell – Banjo player extraordinaire, accomplished luthier, and the world’s tallest midget!
  • David Mowell – College boy, athlete and mando master!

  1. These guys are amazing! I’m from the USA and I’m ashamed to say I’d never heard of them before but I’m now officially a fan!
